Leigh Fuge of MusicTeacher.com is back with another awesome lesson! This week, we'll be taking a look at a Stevie Ray Vaughan Style Texas Blues Shuffle.
If you’re a fan of Stevie Ray Vaughan, you’ll be well aware that his rhythm chops are every bit as intense as his lead playing. In this lesson we’re going to look at a Stevie Ray Vaughan inspired Texas blues shuffle, similar to that heard in the track Pride and Joy.
This shuffle is played with a triplet feel, which means we imagine every beat of the bar as a triplet.
In the accompanying video, the guitar is tuned down a semi tone to Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb as SRV often did, but this works just as well in standard tuning.
This SRV style blues shuffle involves playing a walking bassline on the beat, and a muted upstroke on the “a”. For the full SRV effect, try pushing that upstroke back slightly so it feels a little more urgent going into the fretted notes.
This progression follows the 12 bar blues progression in E, outlining the 1 4 and 5 chords, E, A and B. The first 2 bars sets out the riff, this covers 2 bars of the first chord, the E. This is an ascending and descending run ascends in the first bar and descends in the second. This is then repeated.
For the 4 chord, the riff is repeated but dropped down a string to be rooted from the A.
The only full chords you’ll play here are the B7 and A7 chords that sit in bars 9 and 10 of the progression, but maintain the shuffle feel throughout. Between the B7 and A7 there is a chromatically placed Bb note to walk between the chords, though this is not essential.
Over the final bar, you can either play the riff as normal, or you can add the little chromatic walk shown here that acts as a turnaround, pushing you back to the start.
This way of playing can be tricky to start with and takes a little coordination to get right. Check out the linked video for some tips and best practises. You can take a one bar loop of this and play it over and over to get used to the technique before building it out into the full progression.
