The Boss DD-6 pedal (now sadly discontinued) featured a unique "HOLD" mode. In this mode, pressing and holding the footswitch would make the pedal start recording, and releasing it would put the pedal in the Play mode. Depending on the duration of the pedal hold, the delay could be long (up to 5 seconds,) or very short (in the millisecond range.) The short delay time in HOLD mode is what makes the DD-6 unique. It allows textures and sonic freakouts that aren't achievable with any other pedal.
The Line 6 M9 (and M13) loopers are much more powerful than the primitive looping in the DD-6, but the HOLD mode is elusive. Due to the layout of the footswitches and the switching logic in the M9, the DD-6 HOLD mode is not available. But since the M9 will respond to MIDI commands, we can use an external controller to enable DD-6 style HOLD mode.
Sorry about the video rotation. I'll do another vid shortly to better demonstrate the capabilities of the M9 with an external controller.
